The Falls of Clyde - the Iron Hull

The Bulwark Stays are formed from brass wire, the parts being silver soldered together. An angle brass bar is notched to take the Stay backing plates, which are also silver soldered together, then the individual wire Stays are assembled to this with silver solder at the top point only, where the Stay meets the angle brass and backing plate.    The Hull Waterway Angle Bar and Deck Stringer is drilled to take the foot of each stay - with this in place the backing plates are alined with the  Sheerstrake plating and the cross piece soft soldered in it’s respective hole in the backing plate then cut off flush with it.  This assembly is then soft soldered to a length of Bulwark plating, provided with freeing ports and soft soldered in place to the Hull.
